Beeple: Embracing the New Digital Frontier

The digital artist known worldwide as Beeple, real name Mike Winkelmann, has made an indelible mark on the world of NFTs. Speaking to NFTevening, he explained his approach to his work: “Now I just make whatever the hell I want and pray to God somebody wants to pay money for that.” Despite his meteoric rise in the NFT space, he continues to see himself primarily as a digital artist who is now “starting to wade more into the traditional world (physical world).”

He attributes much of his success to his substantial social media following. “I think social media and building up a following of millions of people over the preceding decade, that’s what allowed me to do something like this once this NFT technology came along,” he said. However, Beeple emphasized that having a built-in audience and a community around an artist's work is crucial for success, regardless of the medium. “Something that people maybe don’t really understand with NFTs is this is not some magic bullet where you’re suddenly going to start selling stuff. If you do not have a built-in audience and you have not built a community around your work, then it is going to be very hard to sell stuff—NFTs, canvas, photography, sculpture, whatever.”

Beeple's journey as an artist was not solely focused on sales. “It had nothing to do with sales for the first 20 years here,” he confessed. “I think it’s really just about making that emotional connection with people. And if people don’t have an emotional connection to your work, I’m sorry, they’re just not going to buy it.”

A year after his record-breaking sale at Christie’s, Beeple admitted that he's still adapting to his newfound fame. “Things were happening at a [normal] pace and then everything just got bumped up to a new pace and then it stayed at that pace,” he said. The attention has been significant: “Even now, when I’m in the fu***** airport, somebody comes up to me and wants to take a fu***** selfie,” Beeple added. “That was not happening before. So, it’s a different level of attention that I’m still getting used to. But, it’s also been just so exciting and something that I just feel so, so blessed and fortunate to be in this position.”

Despite his monumental success, Beeple is quick to acknowledge that a “degree of luck” played a role in his journey. “Even though I put in the time and work,” he said, “I did not invent NFTs.” He acknowledged that he wasn't an early entrant in the NFT space and that others had been working on it for years before him.

Finally, Beeple expressed hope that the NFT space could function as a bridge between traditional and digital art worlds. “A place where I can show physical work immediately without having to wait,” he explained. “It will also be a place where we can have events and bring communities together. I think it is going to be super exciting and something that I’m very much looking forward to.”

Jack Butcher: Simplifying Complexity

Having spent a decade as a creative director for multi-billion dollar brands, Jack Butcher found himself yearning for something more: Freedom. This pursuit led him to establish his own advertising agency, a venture that he soon realized offered “no fun, and even less freedom.”

In his quest for a scalable model, Butcher embraced a profound insight: The need to productize himself. This realization led to a pivot, birthing Visualize Value — a venture that today boasts a $1 million per year product business and a media platform with an audience of more than half a million people.

When asked about his creative process and preference for short-term work, Butcher drew on his agency background. “I think I just forged a preference for working under pressure in an agency environment, and the idea of "running out" of ideas is weirdly motivating," he said. He views the evolution of his business as an organic process, one that wasn't born out of traditional planning. He's relinquished attempts to predict outcomes, choosing instead to trust the process and see where it leads.

Butcher's approach to online education emphasizes principles over tactics. He believes in teaching the fundamentals and allowing learners to figure things out for themselves — a method he finds far more effective than rote memorization. Encouraging learners to create things from what they've learned, he argues, fosters the best feedback loop. In his words: “If you can’t explain it to a 5-year-old, you don’t understand it.”

In discussing his foray into NFTs, Butcher observed that conceptual relevance to the medium greatly influenced the success of his pieces. "I think that even among the NFT pieces that I've launched, there is a huge difference in outcome based on how conceptually relevant they are to the medium of NFTs," he noted. He remarked on the resonance of certain pieces during the early hype of the technology, underlining the unique importance of aligning art with the medium of its expression.

RAC: Harmonizing Music and Art

Andre Anjos, better known by his stage name RAC, is not just an acclaimed artist and musician; he's also a crypto enthusiast. In an interview with Camila Russo, RAC shares his journey into the realm of cryptocurrency. His interest stemmed from a longstanding passion for computer science, a field he sees as intertwined with music production. "Especially with distributed networks, I’d always been kind of interested in this... Naturally, I had heard about Bitcoin at some point," he explained. However, it wasn't until late 2016 that RAC dove into the world of cryptocurrency, a decision fueled by a burgeoning interest in investment.

As part of his foray into this new terrain, RAC introduced the CULT Pass — a unique concept that he began distributing to his most dedicated fans months before its official announcement. "We’re not trying to sell a product with these. It’s more about the concept and building that out,” RAC clarified. The CULT Pass is part of his larger mission to bridge the gap between artists and audiences and address what he perceives as a "broken music industry."

RAC sees the music industry as ripe for disruption, and he believes Ethereum presents an ideal application for instigating this change. His involvement in Ethereum even caught the attention of music streaming giant Spotify. "I remember having a meeting with Spotify and that was like, literally the first thing that they asked me about, it was like, what’s this Ethereum thing?" he recalled.

Pointing out the inequity in the current music industry model, RAC highlighted that artists usually get paid last and may receive only about 15 to 20% of the earnings on a good day. His vision for change centers on an open-source infrastructure. "But I think the main idea is a shared open-source infrastructure underlying, let’s fix that first,” he stated.

RAC proposes the idea of starting a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) for releasing music, where costs are shared in return for ownership. “People could start a DAO for releasing music and pull capital and pay for these basic costs in exchange for a certain amount of ownership,” he explained. This illustrates his broader belief in the transformative potential of blockchain technology in reshaping the relationship between artists and their audiences.
